“In girls group when I was dancing, I could dance however I wanted to and no one would make fun of me”
– Alyssa Orrett (12 year old, BOLD Jr participant)
“Zumba was so much fun. It was my first time doing something like this and I want to do it again!”
-Trishna Jeyawan (15 year old, BOLD participant)
This week BOLD and BOLD Jr. explored the importance of health and physical activity. The girls learned about the impact of eating healthy and the risks associated with not maintaining a healthy lifestyle as well as the benefits of doing so. They learned that being active works to reduce the risks of obesity, diabetes, anxiety and stress and instead helps improve sleep, control weight, manage stress, build energy and lastly increase one’s overall self-esteem and self-confidence.
In keeping with the theme of health and physical activity, a ZUMBA instructor was invited to run a 45 minute session with the girls. Both BOLD and BOLD Jr got the opportunity to dance, exercise, learn new dance styles and discover that being active can also be FUN!
