Some big changes happened over the Christmas break and we started
our first day back in a new class! First we were introduced to the
theme of the day “Chemists in the Classroom”. After having a look at
all of the stations, we decided which experiment to do first. That’s
when things got messy!
Makayla, Anna, and Tatyanna got their hands (and everything else!)
wet when they started mixing baking soda and vinegar together.
Makayla and Anna began to wonder why their cups were overflowing
so quickly and decided to look up the answer on their tablet!
Anna: “It’s some sort of reaction. Those two don’t work well together.”
Daveenah took matters into her own hands and decided to play around
with Alka-Seltzer, vinegar, club soda, and some blue food coloring for
good measure. What the class discovered was a surprise!
Daveenah: “Oh my gosh! It’s smoking! There’s smoke!”
Anna: “Where? Why?”
Makayla: “Maybe it has something to do with the Alka-Seltzer and club
soda. What does Alka-Seltzer do?”
Tatyanna: “It’s supposed to help your stomach feel better. I wonder if
your stomach looks like that when you take it.”
At another station, the girls learned that one of the ingredients in an
Alka-Seltzer tablet is citrus! So they made their own indicator solution
and tried to figure out the magic recipe.
We ended our experiments by finding out whether or not raisins could
dance! We made some guesses about how long we thought they would
dance for – and boy did those raisins surpass our expectations! They
boogied down for about an hour!
