Today, students arrived into the Club and into the classroom with bewilderment! They saw there were two huge rectangles on the floor created with masking tape, along with buckets and a table filled with costumes. Right away they were drawn to the costumes and immediately got into the roles of the costumes they put on. They loved the masks. They were asked to gather around an empty round table to have a discussion about their favourite TV shows and characters, followed by discussing the components of a drama or a play.
As they delved into creating their characters and opened up their imaginations, markers were given to write their “super powers” down. This initiated their creativity even more. A story began to rise from Jacob, then Logan joined in followed by Nathaniel, and Parker; a bit later, Joseph saw the costumes and decided to join our class for the day. Today was Emmanuel’s first day, but he fit right in with his creativity.
Finally for a good 3.5 hours, all of them were immersed in creating the story “The War of the Evil Citizens” and the costumes to go along with their characters. Once the story was written, the play was rehearsed several times with Jacob taking the Lead role in keeping the crowd in- tact and behaviour under control.
The behaviour was managed with a reward system. The reward was a McDonald’s Lunch for the following Saturday.
Following Lunch, we had a game of “racquet ball.”
