Congratulations to the Boys & Girls Club of East Scarborough’s Youth Services team, who were awarded the United Way Bhayana Family Foundation Award for their dedication and committment to the youth in the East Scarborough Community.
In the United Way’s official description, “The purpose of this award is to recognize and reward teams who work toward a common goal. Together, these individuals demonstrate commitment to success through excellent and consistent performance. Ideal teams:
- “Demonstrate the basic principles of teamwork
- “Make a significant contribution to their agency or the clients they serve
- “Implement projects that increase revenue, reduce costs or improve service
- “Increase efficiency, accuracy or productivity of a department or across the agency
- “Put the team’s objective ahead of individual personal gain
- “Champion their cause at all times, both internally and externally
- “Actively support other teams and projects in the agency”
Our team was awarded for its engagement with the community, such as the Enbridge Change the Lights event, in which we worked to change broken light bulbs and fixtures in our community of Danzig; they were awarded for the support they brought to the community – they were always there for anyone who needed a helping hand; they were awarded for strengthening community bonds, bringing together law enforcement officials and community members is great new ways, to improve mutual understanding and strengthen the dialogue between the two sides; they were awarded for fostering positive cultural awareness with Black History Month events and the Unity in the Community Conference – heritage events gave our youth a connection with their pasts; the Unity Conference, with its emphasis on leadership and self-development, helped them look optimistically towards the future. The additional ways our team engaged the youth who attend the Club are too numerous to list in their entirety – basketball and other athletics; leadership training and mentorship; arts programs.
Suffice it to say, the youth team has shown tremendous passion, dedication and hard work this year. They showed that they understood the meaning of duty and the demands of responsibility – and they did it nobly and they did it well. And while this award is truly a great honour, the difference they have already made in the lives of the people whom they encounter, encourage, nurture, educate, and support, day-in, day-out – this is the truest recognition of their achievement; this is their legacy.
