We at the Boys & Girls Club of East Scarborough would like to take this moment – the holidays being as good a time as any for expressing gratitude and appreciation – to give our sincerest thanks to and respect for Akanimo Udofia, the Toronto-based businessperson who recently donated $150,000 of his own money to support youth programs and “resident development” in Scarborough. This summer convinced him that local, Scarborough youth need more and better support and encouragement, in the form of programs and resources that help them develop into engaged, productive, healthy, and constructive citizens and members of the community – all of which is good not only for the personal development of the young people concerned but also the very communities to which they belong. He saw a need and he stepped up. There are bigger questions worth asking, it’s true – for example, what created this need and what can we do about it collectively? – but those are for another time. For now, what can we say but kudos to Mr. Udofia for showing the difference an individual can make, when he or she refuses to accept the status quo, when he or she recognizes that we can do better and does his or her best to help this dream become a reality. On behalf of the community of East Scarborough, thank you Mr. Udofia!
